Tower of Edar

“As for you, Tower of the Flock (Tower of Edar), Hill of the daughter of Zion, To you it will come—

Yes, the former dominion will come, The kingdom of the daughter of Jerusalem.

-Micah 4:8

What is the Tower of Edar

The Migdal Eder (Tower of Edar or literally Tower of the Flock) is a shepherd's watchtower just outside of Bethlehem and near to the burial place of Rachel. Giving the shepherds an elevated position to look after the very valuable flock that made up the sacrificial lambs destined for the high temple.

Migdal Eder Prophesized About Messiah

In the Rabbinical Targum Jonathan on Genesis 35:21 written 150-250 AD and sourced from a deeper understanding of [Micah 4:8] than we had today, the Rabbis wrote:

And Jacob proceeded and pitched his tent beyond Migdal Eder, the place where the King Messiah will reveal Himself at the end of the age.

-Targum Jonathan on Genesis 35:21

A few points of note; the end of the age that is referenced is the years leading up to the end of the two thousand year long Age of Torah/Law (Onahs 5 thru 8) that existed between roughly 1925 BC and 75 AD. The end of days being the last 100 years of that time frame. Also the Migdal Eder was known to be the source of sacrificial lambs from the Talmud Mishnah Shekalim 7:4 which states:

"What were these twelve months for? From the [new collection] they would offer the continual sacrifices and the additional sacrifices, the libations, the omer, the two loaves, and the showbread, all the communal offerings, and the guards of the towers of Edar [Migdal Eder] and the guards of the city."

-Mishnah Shekalim 7:4

The Implications with Yeshua

This tower was designed to be the "office" for the shepherds to guard the flock of sacrificial lambs that had no blemish on them, never broke a bone, were ritually pure, and were of the right age of full maturity.

Those shepherds were the required witnesses to one of the most important events of creation. In the Tanakh, nothing decisive happens without witnesses. Revelation, covenant, judgment, kingship, exile, and restoration are all anchored to seen, heard, and testified events. This is not incidental. The biblical worldview treats truth as something established through testimony, not abstraction.

“By the mouth of two or three witnesses a matter shall be established.”
-Deuteronomy 19:15

“You are My witnesses, says the LORD.”
-Isaiah 43:10

These are the two sons of oil, who stand by the Lord of all the earth.
Zechariah 4:14

And I will grant authority to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy…
-Revelation 11:3

This legal rule is not confined to courts. It becomes the architecture of biblical history. This maters because:

  • Truth is public
  • Revelation is witnessed
  • Covenant is testified
  • Judgment is evidenced
  • Hope is remembered

God binds Himself to history in a way that can be seen, heard, and retold.

This is why shepherds, elders, prophets, kings, stones, songs, and even heaven and earth matter. They are not decorations — they are witnesses, and without witnesses, nothing decisive is allowed to stand.

These shepherds both witnessed the birth of a King, and also fulfilled their job of overseeing the lamb of Yahweh that it is pure, true and marked for its future sacrifice.
